Rain is the one kind of weather you cannot walk off. Everything you have on underneath works right up to the moment it gets wet, and this is the layer that decides when that moment arrives. Cut on a women's pattern, which on a shell is less about a narrower fit than about where the fixed points land: the hem, the two hand pockets and the hood. Taped seams over a smooth lining, so it goes on over a fleece in one pull and keeps doing its job after the rain has settled in.

Lightweight hooded waterproof with taped seams over a smooth lining, two zipped hand pockets, adjustable cuffs, and a drawcord hem that runs longer at the back than the front. It makes no warmth of its own and is not meant to, so leave room for a fleece underneath. Size: XS, S, M, L, XL.

Cut on a women's pattern, narrower through the shoulder and shaped through the waist, so take your usual size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one, because everything here is meant to be layered.

Machine wash cool and inside out, and skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibre and is the most common way people ruin the wicking on a base layer. Do not tumble dry fleece or anything waterproof. Heated pieces are washed only with the power cell removed.
